SDG #13 CLIMATE ACTION:
Take urgent action to combat climate change
and its impacts
Trees help to combat global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide, removing and storing carbon while releasing oxygen back into the air. They also reduce wind speeds and cool the air as they lose moisture and reflect heat upwards from their leaves. It’s estimated that trees can reduce the temperature in a city by up to 7°C.Other environmental benefits include the fact they help to prevent flooding and soil erosion, by absorbing thousands of liters of storm water. Karachi is one of the most polluted cities of the world. One of the best ways to improve the environment of our cities is to encourage plantation of trees in our cities.
Every Year HISWO runs plantation campaigns in Karachi as it believes that tree not only provide a source of beauty and interest in the otherwise bleak urban landscape but they have crucial environmental benefits and give all us city-dwellers a place to relax, away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. People from all walks of life are invited to participate in these drives and play their role in improving the environment of the city. However, as always, school children are the most enthusiastic participants of the campaigns and contribute by planting thousands of trees.
Tree plantation: HISWO planted around 1000 different plants at different places, especially at schools in Karachi to tackle climate change and its impact.
Air Pollution: Explored air pollution with activities aimed at helping students understand how ground level ozone and other pollutants form and how they impact on our health.
Air Quality Teaching Box: The teaching box is filled with educational resources that help students the science of and solutions to air pollution.
Modeling Smog: Students created molecule models using marshmallows to understand and explain how smog forms
